LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's soccer team dropped a conference match to Kansas, 3-0, on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan. On Friday, the Red Raiders fell to Colorado, 3-0.
In Sunday's match, the Jayhawks were able to get two early goals to give them a 2-0 advantage. The first goal came from Holly Gault in the 13th minute. Gault tallied a goal off of a pass in the middle. Jessica Busch tallied the second goal shortly after in the 15th minute. Texas Tech's goalkeeper Tina Rincon collected four saves in the first period.
The match was sent to halftime with Kansas leading the Red Raiders, 3-0.
In the second half, Texas Tech came out with a much stronger offense than the Jayhawks. The Red Raiders out shot the Jayhawks 10-8 and earned three more corner kicks than Kansas. Seven of the eight saves that Kansas recorded were in the second half. Despite the Red Raiders strong effort, Kansas was given another scoring opportunity at the 60:52 mark when Sara Rogers recorded the final goal of the match. The match ended giving Kansas a 3-0 victory over Texas Tech.
Texas Tech's Chessa Purser led the Red Raiders with four shots and three of them being on the goal. Purser collected the most shots on goal for both Texas Tech and Kansas. Earlier in the season, Purser scored five goals against Prairie View A&M and one goal against No. 12 Oklahoma State.
Tech falls to 6-11-2 overall and 1-7-1 in conference action with the loss. Kansas improves to 11-6 and 6-3 after going 2-0 on the weekend. The Jayhawks defeated Baylor, 1-0, on Friday night.
"We played very well today," said head coach Neil McGuire. "In fairness to Kansas they were certainly the better team in the first half and scored two good goals. However in the second half I felt like we had a great deal of the play and could have scored several times. Elite level teams can absorb pressure and score on the counter attack, and Kansas did just that. I am proud of the players. We also have to thank our fans and the `Gunners' for traveling to support us."
This weekend was the last road trip for the Red Raiders this season. The Red Raiders will return to R.P. Fuller Stadium for their last match of the season as they host the Baylor Bears on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
