IRVING, Texas - Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego and Kevin Chelimo were named the Big 12 Cross Country Runners of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. Along with this honor, each of the Red Raiders received the accolade for the week of October 4th. This past weekend, both competed at the highly-competitive Chile Pepper Invitational.
Kipyego led the Tech squad with a first-place finish at the Chile Pepper. She clocked a time of 19:29.3 in the 6K, finishing 26 seconds faster than second place. The first-place finish marks her third consecutive of the season, as she finished ahead of the pack at the Red Raider Jackrabbit Open and the Murray Keatinge Invitational. Kipyego led then-No. 28 Tech to a third-place finish. The effort has moved Texas Tech higher in the latest polls released, as the Red Raiders are now ranked 21st, the squad's highest ranking in school history.
Chelimo finished eighth at the Chile Pepper in the 10K event. He finished in a time of 28:43.1 to mark his third top-10 finish of the season. He led the Red Raiders to a team finish of 14th. Chelimo finished first at the Murray Keatinge to receive his first ever Big 12 Runner of the Week honor.
The Texas Tech teams will next compete at the Big 12 Championships in Lawrence, Kan., on Friday, October 27th.
