Kipyego Finishes First in Tough Chile Pepper Field

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The No. 28 Texas Tech women's cross country squad was led to a third-place finish by Sally Kipyego's field-pacing effort at Saturday's Chile Pepper Invitational. The men finished in 14th behind Kevin Chelimo's eighth place.
Kipyego finished the women's 6K race with a clocking of 19:29.3, 26 seconds faster than second place. The race marks Kipyego's third-consecutive first-place finish in a race. Irene Kimaiyo finished in third place, her third top-three finish of the year, with a time of 20:10.9. Violet Chemakwila took 33rd with a run of 21:19.7, while Asia Diaz ran a time of 21:33.9 to finish 40th. The final scoring runner for the Red Raiders was Gladys Kipsang who finished 69th with a time of 22:06.9.
No. 4-ranked Arkansas women cruised to the victory in the field of 43 with each of their scored individuals finishing no worse than 14th. The Lady Razorbacks finished with 41 points, while No. 20 Duke took second with 132. Tech was two points behind the Blue Devils with 134.
The Tech men's squad, who finished in 14th, was led by eighth-place Chelimo with a clocking of 28:43.1. Silas Kemboi took 63rd with a running of 30:59.9, while Edwin Sang had a time of 31:20.6 to finish in 83rd. John Means had a time of 32:46.7 to finish 176th with Cory Higgins two places behind in 178th with a run of 32:53.7.
No. 11 UTEP men finished first in the pack of 33 squads with 64 points. Second-ranked Arkansas fell short of the Miners by 13 points to finish second with 77.
