LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raiders tallied seven shots on goal, but it was not enough to defeat Iowa State. Tech lost to the Cyclones on Sunday afternoon in Aimes, Iowa, 1-0.
The only goal scored in the match was late in the first half. Iowa State's Lauren Odino rebounded off of a Texas Tech block and tallied a goal in the 38th minute. Odino was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week last week.
Chessa Purser and Kim Cypert led the Red Raiders each earning two shots on goal. Texas Tech controlled the ball for most of the second half. They out shot the Cyclones, 10-6, but was unable to score a goal.
"After beating nationally ranked Missouri on Friday night we came into Ames and played like we were owed a victory," said head coach Neil McGuire. "Too many players completely shut down after they scored their goal and actually stopped trying for long periods. We fully deserved to lose. We need to grasp the magnitude of each and every game in this conference."
The Red Raiders (5-7, 1-3) went 1-1 this weekend in Big 12 action. Iowa State improves to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in conference. Tech defeated No. 17 Missouri on Friday night in Columbia, Missouri, 3-1. The last time the Red Raiders earned a conference win was against Missouri Oct. 26, 2003. Tech defeated the Tigers, 3-1.
Red Raiders will take a break from Big 12 action on Oct. 6. They will face South Dakota State in Brooksing, South Dakota, at 7 p.m. Tech will get back into conference play when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., on Oct. 8, to face Nebraska at 12 p.m.
