
Cross Country Heads to Lobo Invite

Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country teams will be heading west to the Lobo Invite, held annually on the campus of the University of New Mexico. The men's race will begin at 8:40 a.m. and the women's race will start at 9:10 a.m. on Sat., Sept. 10, in Albuquerque.
Tech is coming of a sweep of the Texas Tech Invitational. Kevin Chelimo was the top Tech male finisher and Violet Chemakwila led the way for the women.
Chelimo finished in first place with a time of 19:03.03 in the men's 6K race. Fellow Kenyan Benson Cheserek clocked a time of 19:29.44, good for a silver finish. Freshman Aaron Greer rounded out the Red Raider top five with a clocking of 20:59.89 and a fifth-place finish overall.
Chemakwila was the top female Tech harrier with a second-place finish and a clocking of 17:21.29 in the women's 5K race. Irene Kimaiyo earned a bronze finish with her clocking of 17:41.03. Katie Leonard clocked a time of 18:34.80 and finished in fourth place. Freshman Asia Diaz rounded out the top five with her clocking of 18:37.32.
The collegiate field at the Lobo Invite will feature some of the top teams in both the region and nation. Colorado State, New Mexico, UTEP, Adams State, Western State and New Mexico State will all be competing on Saturday.
LSU was scheduled to make the trip to Albuquerque for the fifth-straight year before it was forced to cancel its travel plans due to the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
