Postgame Quotes (TEXAS TECH)
Head Coach Mike Leach
On the game...
"Hicks looked pretty good. The whole core of receivers looked pretty good. We dropped some balls that I wish we hadn't. We are still battling to play smart and I'm not just talking about penalties because I thought we played hard for 60 minutes. When our young guys went in, I thought they played extremely hard. We played smarter this week because I can see that we are getting better on all three sides of the ball. We need to play smarter and we need to continue to improve."
"We are excited about the younger guys getting in. I was happy with the production of guys like Taurance Rawls, Eric Morris and Catron Houston. Graham Harrell played well. I liked what a lot of the young offensive lineman did. Our young defensive players did some good things. We gave up some big plays which was unfortunate but we are starting to come together as a unit. I felt like as a team we played from start to finish for 60 minutes."
On Sam Houston State ...
"They have one of the best coaching staffs I have ever dealt with and I have followed their program for years. They do some good things with the ball. We had a few explosives that threw this a little bit out of order. But I can't say enough about the job their staff does."
Cody Hodges
On Hicks...
"Jarrett did great. He is a tremendous athlete. He handled the situation well last week and he was fired up and ready to go tonight. I think having Hicks back will open things up. Because of his reputation, defenses are going to want to put two men on him. This will leave other guys open whether it's Robert or Filani.
On the game...
"I think we worked hard. We're not trying to make it out like we are trying to run up the score. We're just worried about Texas Tech and working hard. A lot of that contributes to the freshmen the came in and if they can go down the field and score points that gives us confidence. Right now we need to just work on getting better. We improved from last week, but we need to cut down on penalties."
Dwayne Slay
On his performance...
"To get a big hit always feels good. In practice, we execute well and are always told to square up, make tackles and keep the offense out of the end zone."
"What hit me in my mind and in the guys' mind, when the offense strikes as fast as they do, we're going to have to go back on the field, so we have to be in good shape."
On Phillip Daugherty...
"We were happy to see Phillip. To be honest with you, we didn't practice for Phillip, we practiced for the rest of the team."
Jarrett Hicks
On his performance...
"It was fun being out there. I played and did what I could. Being a receiver we want the ball, I was just trying to do whatever I could within the offense. I think Cody did a good job getting everyone the ball. As the season goes along it'll be a lot harder for teams within the conference to double-team me. I'm overjoyed that Robert stepped up as well as Filani and Danny."
On the game...
"We can get a lot out of playing a I-AA teams. We worry about our team and not everyone else. We just do what we do and let the rest take care of itself."
Keyunta Dawson
On the game...
"I want our defense to get better each game. I think we had a good showing today. I just want us to get better as a whole, because we have some tough games coming up. Coach will talk to us about penalties; we have to get rid of those and little mistakes. I think we played a great team, and came in focused and had a good game."
Postgame Quotes (SAM HOUSTON STATE )
Head Coach Todd Whitten
Opening Statement
"I think we were certainly outmanned. I think that was obvious. Texas Tech has a very good football team and our hope is, as a team and individually, we made improvements that will serve us well as we play
"Overall, I'm pleased with the attitude and effort and would like to try to get better."
On positives from the game...
"We had only one turnover, that's a positive. I was disappointed with the penalties. We had 8 by the half and can't do that and be effective in conference. Offensively, we just played decent. I was hoping we might play a little better."
"There were some bright spots. I'm proud of our guys and we're still going to have a good team relative to our conference."
On being back at Tech...
"It was really nice. I have a lot of good friends here at Texas Tech. This is where I had my first coaching job. I have a lot of respect for
On the ejection...
"He's a freshman and played hard and was certainly confused about what he'd done when he came over to the side. He had no clue what had happened. The officials made a good call on that."
On feelings of Leach running up the score...
"No hard feelings whatsoever. Coach Leach is a hell of a coach. He does what he does and it's our job to stop them."
