LUBBOCK, Texas - With Big 12 conference action kicking off next weekend, the Red Raider soccer team will travel to El Paso, Texas, on Friday to battle the UTEP Miners at University Field at 2 p.m. in the team's final non-conference tune-up.
The Red Raiders and Miners have met on the soccer field in each of the last four seasons. UTEP has won the last three match-ups in the series, including a 3-2 victory in El Paso last season, but Tech, which won the first five meetings between the schools, still leads the overall series 5-3.
Following a pair of matches in Tulsa, Okla., last weekend, a pair of Red Raiders were selected as All-Tournament performers. Ana Morton, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, started both games over the weekend and posted a pair of strong outings on defense. For the season, Morton has started six games for the Red Raiders and has registered six shots. Joining Morton as an All-Tournament selection was sophomore forward Kim Cypert. The Sugar Land, Texas, native tallied her first goal of the season and the Red Raiders' only score of the weekend in Friday's 2-1 loss to Oral Roberts.
Senior Kimmie Davis has been an offensive force for the Red Raiders, leading the team in goals (4), points (9) and shots (19). Freshman Chessa Purser has also been impressive on the offensive end by collecting 17 shots, second only to Davis for the team lead in that category. The Cypress, Texas, native tallied her first career goal in dramatic fashion this season, scoring an overtime game-winner on Aug. 30 against Sam Houston State.
UTEP enters the weekend looking to improve upon its perfect 7-0 record. The Miners have outscored their opponents 20-5 this season and boast three players who have scored four goals this season. Sophomore forward Cara Nordin leads the team with 11 points this season on four goals and three assists. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Brittney Popoff has put up impressive numbers, compiling a 0.62 goals against average and .871 save percentage in 583:31 minutes this season.
Next weekend, Texas Tech soccer will begin Big 12 Conference play when they host the Iowa State Cyclones and the Nebraska Cornhuskers at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
