LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech football coaching staff welcomed 105 players Wednesday as newcomers and varsity returnees reported for the start of preseason training camp. Among the group were 82 scholarship players and 23 walk-ons.
Red Raider junior wide receiver Jarrett Hicks, fresh off of a record-setting 13 touchdown reception season, echoed the mood of the players.
"I am excited to get things underway," Hicks said. "Mainly my excitement is going out and playing football again. Everyone has worked hard over the summer and we are anxious to get back out there and go to work."
Tech spring signee Marlon Winn of Grand Prairie was among the 20 signees who reported and is looking forward to officially getting in uniform and working out Thursday.
"I'm super excited to be here and finally getting started," Winn said. "I have been here for two months working out and am ready to put it all to work. There are a lot of us here who are going to do a great job. I've been playing football since the eighth grade and have been in love with it ever since. I want to do something big while I'm here."
The Red Raiders will go through physicals and a team meeting tonight following a team dinner. Practice officially gets underway Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. workout following a morning of orientation and meetings.
Texas Tech kicks off the 2005 season against Florida International on Sat., Sept. 10, at 6 p.m. at Jones SBC Stadium.
