Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas - Texas Tech sprinter Andrae Williams won the 400M dash at the Bahamas National meet this past weekend. The victory guarantees him a trip to the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, in August.
Williams, who just completed his junior season, ran the fastest qualifying time in the prelims at 46.33.
Williams, the hometown favorite, was competing against reigning national champion Chris Brown and former world champion Avard Moncur.
In the finals of the event, Brown took the pace out fast and opened a sizeable lead on the rest of the field by the time they got to the 200-meter mark. Williams caught Brown with 30 meters left to run and just passed him as they crossed the finish line. Williams' winning time was a clocking of 45.33.
Williams was a 2055 Outdoor All-American in the 400M with a clocking of 44.90, his first below the 45-second mark, and earned a third-place finish. Williams also earned All-America honors as a member of the indoor and outdoor 4x400M relays. He was crowned the 2005 Big 12 Indoor Champion in the 600Y back in February.
Williams will return to Tech for his senior campaign after competing in the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, in August.
