LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech true freshman defensive end McKinner Dixon (Lufkin, Texas) was selected to the CollegeFootballNews.com Freshman All-America Second Team, the site announced Tuesday night.
Dixon made his impact felt immediately, earning a starting nod in only his second collegiate game against Indiana State. The start marked the earliest a true freshman had ever started in a season under Mike Leach.
An outstanding addition to the end position, Dixon posted six tackles in his first start and added two tackles for loss. He finished the regular season with a career-high eight tackles in Tech's win over Oklahoma and was one of the top defenders behind the line of scrimmage with six tackles for loss on the season.
Dixon is the first freshman to receive the honor since Wes Welker was named to The Sporting News Freshman All-America team in 2000.
