LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech FS Dwayne Slay (Brunswick, Ga.) was named the SBC Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, one day after earning Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week of the week honors. Slay posted a career-high 18 tackles and a sack in Tech's 28-0 win at Baylor on Saturday.
Slay, who currently leads the team with 69 tackles, also forced his seventh fumble of the season, tying the Big 12 single-season record, set by Texas' Derrick Johnson in 2004. Slay ranks second nationally, behind Louisville's Elvis Dumervil, who has eight.
The 6-3, 215-pound senior's performance highlighted the Red Raiders' first shutout of a conference opponent, since blanking Texas A&M (12-0) in Lubbock during the 2001 season. The shutout also was the first for Tech against a Big 12 opponent on the road.
