LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's soccer team will head to El Paso and the campus of University of Texas at El Paso to compete in the Border Shootout this weekend. The Red Raiders will battle the Miners of UTEP, Thurs., Sept. 16, at 8 p.m. After two days off, Tech resumes play Sun., Sept. 19, against Weber State. Kick-off against the Wildcats on Sunday is slated for 12 p.m.
The Red Raiders are coming off a 1-1 weekend at R.P. Fuller Stadium where they encountered the Belles of Angelo State and No. 2 Notre Dame. Tech posted a 4-2 victory over Angelo State, where junior goalkeeper Beth Lippert earned her second victory of the season and freshman Priscilla Esquivel added two goals to her season tally.
The Tech defense was strong against the Fighting Irish but the offense had trouble keeping control of the ball. The Red Raiders were defeated by Notre Dame, 3-0. Lippert added seven saves to her season total and the Tech defense held Notre Dame to 11 shots on goal when they had been averaging 16 per contest.
"UTEP and Weber State are both very physical teams," explained head coach Felix Oskam. "We played a physical team in New Mexico and didn't do very well. This is going to be a good test for us to see what we learned from the game at New Mexico. It will also be important to see what will happen after a 1-1 weekend and losing a respectable 3-0 to Notre Dame. Our kids believe they can play with any team in the country now and that is half the battle."
