LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team has had some close matches this season and Friday night was no different. No. 33 Texas outlasted the No. 61 Red Raiders, 4-3, at the Falls Country Club.
In doubles action, the Longhorns swept the Red Raiders to claim the victory in a match that lasted more than five hours.
In singles action, the Horns and Red Raiders split the six matches. Tech's Jakob Paulsen beat Antonio Ruiz 6-4, 7-5, at the No.1 spot, while freshman Dinko Halachev defeated Ryan Haymond 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 5 slot. At the No. 6 position, freshman Dimitrio Martinez outplayed Will Clinton 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Although it was a great team effort, Texas Tech Coach Tim Siegel knows this is a match that got away.
"This is the toughest lost that I have ever experienced," Siegel said. "We had a great team effort, but when you have match points on two courts, and you can't finish it, then it is very tough to swallow. We had a great college atmosphere and fan support, but we just couldn't get the win."
With the loss, Tech drops to 9-8 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12.
