LUBBOCK, Texas - With three days to go until Christmas, dreams of a white holiday season became reality as the South Plains awoke this morning to a two-inch blanket of snow. For the Texas Tech football team, however, those dreams will be short lived as the Red Raiders will board a plane Friday afternoon for sunny Southern California and a matchup with fourth-ranked California in the 2004 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.
The No. 21 Red Raiders completed their Lubbock workouts with an 11 a.m. practice Wednesday on the snow-covered practice fields at the Football Training Facility. The team worked through a typical Thursday practice, concentrating on special teams and light contact drills against the scout teams.
Despite the covered field and inclement weather, the players' focus remained on the Holiday Bowl and Tech's Dec. 30 meeting with California.
"Once we adjusted to the conditions, it was business as usual," quarterback Sonny Cumbie said. "A lot of us braved the weather and came out a little early to get our footing. It wasn't too bad; just another one of those things you have to overcome to be successful. Our focus for the last couple of weeks has been the California Bears, and we didn't stray from that today."
The team was given the remainder of Wednesday through Friday afternoon off to spend time with family and friends before boarding a 4 p.m. charter Friday for San Diego.
The 2004 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego will kickoff at 7 p.m. CST on Thu., Dec. 30. The game will be televised on ESPN.
