LUBBOCK, Texas - After playing a scoreless half of soccer, the Lady Raider soccer team was unable to continue its season opener with the New Mexico Lobos as the Lubbock area was besieged by heavy rains and lightning. Head coach Felix Oskam announced following the decision that the game would not be made up since New Mexico did not have an open date later during the season.
The teams took the field shortly after a pre-game ceremony in which Red Raider defender Allison Horn, who was killed in an automobile accident last spring, was remembered. After battling with the Lobos for 45 minutes of play, the teams headed to the locker room and at the conclusion of halftime, school officials became aware of the impending weather and made the decision to delay the start of the second half. The game was officially called off after an hour delay in which the weather showed few signs of improving to the point where it would be deemed safe for the teams to return to the field.
Tech will now look to earn its first win of the season as they travel to Tulsa, Okla., to face Oral Roberts on Sunday. The team will return home on Sept 28th when they host Kansas in a Big 12 Conference match.
