LUBBOCK, Texas - Oklahoma State's Mario Matulich went 4-for-5 with four RBI to lead the Cowboys to an 11-7 win over Texas Tech on Friday night at Dan Law Field.
Oklahoma State (31-21; 13-12) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Mario Matulich laced an RBI single up the middle to give the Cowboys a 1-0 lead. Tech starter Nathan Fouts loaded the bases and Scott Kirby made him pay for it when he hit a grand slam over the left-center field wall to push the OSU lead to five runs. The grand slam by Kirby was the first hit against the Red Raiders this season.
The Cowboys extended their lead to 7-0 by scoring two in the top of the fifth thanks to a couple of RBI singles by Matulich and Kenny Hansley.
Texas Tech (29-24; 7-17) finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Tech scored three unearned runs on three hits and took advantage of two Cowboy defensive errors.
Oklahoma State scored four runs over the next three innings to take a 11-3 lead. The Pokes pounded out seven hits over that stretch and got a two-run home run from Mario Matulich in the eighth.
Texas Tech rallied in the bottom of the eighth as the Red Raiders picked up four runs including a three-run home run by Josh Haney. The home run was Haney's sixth of the season.
Tech got runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the inning but Cowboy reliever Shane Hawk ended the threat by retiring the next three batters to end the game.
Scott Baker (10-4) earned the win for Oklahoma State as he pitched seven innings allowing non earned runs on just nine hits and struckout eight. Nathan Fouts (4-6) suffered the loss for Texas Tech as he gave up five earned runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Texas Tech finds itself in a must-win situation as the Red Raiders must win their final two games to have any chance at next week's Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City. The Red Raiders and Cowboys will tangle at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the second game of the three-game set.
