MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State's Jim Ripley held Texas Tech to just three hits over seven innings to lead the Wildcats to a 5-1 win over the Red Raiders on a wet Saturday afternoon in Manhattan. The loss drops Texas Tech to 5-11 in the Big 12 and gives Kansas State its first Big 12 series win of the season.
Kansas State jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Marc Chabot reached on a one-out walk and moved to third on a single to right field by Pat Maloney. Chabot scored on an infield groundout by Tim Doty that Tech second baseman Josh Haney had trouble getting out of his glove and couldn't turn the inning ending double play.
Kansas State's Jim Ripley pitched six straight innings of one-hit ball before Josh Haney singled with two outs in the seventh. The two-out single by Haney set up an RBI double by T.J. Bruce that put Tech on the board for the first time and tied the game at 1-1.
Just as the momentum seemed to be going the way of the Red Raiders, Kansas State quickly struck back as Wildcat center fielder Brian Patty singled to right and the ball went under the glove of Madison Edwards scoring Zack Saunders all the way from first. Kansas State plated one more run in the inning to take a 3-1 lead as Terry Blunt singled to right-center scoring Patty from second.
Nathan Fouts came back in the bottom of the eighth despite having thrown 135 pitches. Fouts struckout Pat Maloney to start off the inning but then walked Tim Doty and gave up a two-run home run to Ryan Baldwin before being replaced and having thrown a team season-high 148 pitches.
Fouts suffered the loss for Texas Tech and fell to 3-4 on the year while Jim Ripley earned the win for Kansas State and improved to 3-4.
Texas Tech will try to avoid the sweep as the Red Raiders and Wildcats will play at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
