Women's Cross Country Captures First Place Title

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's cross country team made an exceptional showing at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma, winning the tournament with a score of 93 points. The 19-team field included four other schools in the Big 12; Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Freshman Irene Kimaiyo was Tech's top finisher with a time of 21:30, crossing the finish line in seventh place, her first time to be Tech's top finisher. Running a 21:41, junior Brionne Yosten finished in 12th place. Rounding out the top 20 performances was senior Tracie Akerhielm who finished in 20th place after running a 22:02.
With a time of 22:11, sophomore Katie Leonard finished in 26th place. Sophomore Abby Schubert finished in 30th place with a time of 22:17 while junior Stephanie Calhoun logged a 37th place finish with a time of 22:32. Junior Kelly Blikre finished 42nd for Tech after finishing the course in 22:41. Freshman Anna Hagood finished in 76th after running 23:41. Freshman Ruth Camacho rounds out Tech competitors with a 99th place finish and time of 24:23.
The men's team finished in 14th place with sophomore Benson Cheserek, for the fourth consecutive meet, leading the team with a 19th place finish and a time of 24:56. Senior Joseph McCellon finished in 27th with a time of 25:03. Finishing at 115th, Rob Kalesky ran a 26:40 with sophomore Kyle Atwood close behind with a time of 26:52 and a 130th placing.
Junior Dwayne Benoit finished in 143rd after running the course in 27:02. Junior Adam Lawless was Tech's final competitor with a time of 27:29, finishing in 168th.
The first round of rankings will be released tomorrow by www.trackshark.com. Tech will next compete at the Chili Pepper Invite in Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 18.
