Women's Cross Country Takes Second at Chili Pepper Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas - The women's cross country team earned a second place finish at the Chile Pepper Invitational in Lafayette, Ark., finishing ahead of No. 19 Arkansas with a score of 122. The team finished eight strokes behind of Nevada who finished first in the 37-team field.
For the first time this season, senior Tracie Akerhielm finished first for the team with a time of 21:12.20, finishing in seventh place. Freshman Irene Kimaiyo turned in a 13th place finish with a time of 21:25.55. Trailing closely behind Kimaiyo was Brionne Yosten who finished in 14th with a time of 21:29.20.
Sophomore Katie Leonard turned in a time of 22:19.94 to finish in 50th place while sophomore Abby Schubert finished at 56th with a time of 22:28.40. Freshman Anna Hagood ran a 23:16.55 to finish at 108th while freshman Ruth Camacho finished in 150th with a time of 24:07.79.
The men's team finished in 12th with a score of 355. Senior Joseph McCellon turned in a 19th place finish with a time of 30:25.15 to lead Tech for the first time this season. Sophomore Benson Cheserek ran a 30:47.30 to finish in 30th. With a time of 32:19.44, junior Dwayne Benoit finished in 111th with sophomore Kyle Atwood closely behind with a finish of 115th and time of 32:27.80.
Junior Rob Kalesky finished in 139th after running the course in 33:00.17. Junior Adam Lawless ran a 33:19.07 to finish in 158th.
The teams will next compete at the Big 12 Championship in Austin Texas on Oct. 31.
