LUBBOCK, Texas - Preparations for the 2003 Texas Tech Baseball season will get underway on Thursday afternoon as the Red Raiders will begin fall practice at Dan Law Field.
Texas Tech Head Coach Larry Hays, who begins his 17th season at Texas Tech, will welcome a total of 48 players to fall practice including 12 returning players from 2002. The 48 players will workout for a total of 23 days and the Tech coaching staff will evaluate their play before making the final roster in late fall. The 2003 season will mark the first time in four years that the Red Raiders will compete with 11.7 scholarships after competing at the level of 8.7 due to a department-wide NCAA probation that began in 1998. The Tech baseball team, however, never missed an NCAA Tournament and didn't finish lower than fifth in the Big 12 during the probation period.
Practices will begin during the week at approximately 2:15 while weekend practice times are listed as TBA. The team will not practice on Wednesdays.
The annual seven-game Red & Black series will begin on Sat. Sept. 21 and wrap up on Sat. Sept. 28. The Red & Black series and all fall practices are open to the public.
Texas Tech finished the 2002 season with an overall record of 42-20 and finished in a second place tie with Nebraska in the Big 12 Conference. The Red Raiders advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the eighth straight year as the squad earned a No. 2 seed at the Rice Regional in Houston. Tech's eight consecutive NCAA Tournament bids is the longest active streak in the Big 12.
A fall roster will be added to the website in the next week.
