LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Head Baseball Coach Larry Hays announced today that Brian Strickland has been named the new pitching coach (volunteer assistant position) at Texas Tech replacing Ryan Brewer who left the program this week to pursue other coaching interests in college baseball.
Strickland comes to Texas Tech from Abilene Christian University where he has served as pitching coach the last three seasons. Prior to his stint at Abilene Christian he was the pitching coach at Dallas Baptist University for five seasons.
"We are really fortunate to have a guy like Brian Strickland on our coaching staff," said Texas Tech Head Coach Larry Hays. "Brian was instrumental in the success of Dallas Baptist and has helped lead Abilene Christian to that same success." I think he is going to work well with our pitching staff and will be a great representative of Texas Tech University."
Ryan Brewer, who has led the Tech pitching staff the last two seasons, left the program this week to pursue other coaching interests in college baseball. NCAA regulations prohibit three assistant coaches from recruiting at the Div. 1 level and Brewer made his decision to leave based on his desire to not only coach college pitchers but recruit as well.
"I want to thank Coach Hays for allowing me the opportunity to work on the staff the last two seasons," said Brewer." I love Texas Tech and I know the pitching staff will be in great hands with Brian (Strickland). This move is best for both me and my family because if I want to be a head coach one day I have to get my foot in the door when it comes to recruiting."
The pitching coach position at Texas Tech is a volunteer position as the NCAA only allows for two paid assistant coaches. Greg Evans (fielding) and Daren Hays (hitting) are the two paid assistant coaches for the Red Raiders.
