Tech Track Teams Complete First Day at NCAAs

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - After day one at the NCAA national indoor meet at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., the Texas Tech track and field teams had three athletes qualify for tomorrow's finals.
In the first event of the day for Tech sophomore Mike Beasley cleared 6 feet 11.75 inches (2.13m) to place ninth. His height cleared was the fifth best mark of the finals but with one more miss at 2.09m than Matt Vincent of Florida the judges awarded Vincent eighth place and the points.
Freshman Jonathan Johnson ran his second fastest time of the indoor season as he placed fourth in the second heat of the men's 800m. By sprinting to a 1:48.73 finish Johnson qualified for Saturday's finals as the sixth fastest runner.
Sophomore Shannon Spaulding ran in the third heat of the 800m posting a time of 2 minutes 7.94 seconds. The time was the fifth fastest in her heat and the 13th fastest preliminary time but she will not advance to tomorrow's finals.
Freshman Licretia Sibley paced the field in the second heat of the women's 200m but was unable to hold off Me'Lisa Barber of South Carolina for first. She finished second in the heat with a time of 53.18, fast enough to get her into the finals held tomorrow as the seventh seed.
In the final race of the day for the Red Raiders, Senior Monique Wright-Cruse sprinted to an eighth place finish in the first heat of the women's 60m. Her time of 7.52 was her second fastest time of the season in the event.
Tech did not score any points on the first day of the 2002 NCAA indoor meet but will be represented in four events on the final day of competition. Johnson will run in the 800m at 6:35 p.m., Sibley will run at 6:45 followed by the women's and men's 4x400 relay teams which will close out the championships running at 7:55 and 8:10 p.m. respectively.
