Tech Baseball Announces 2004 Signing Class

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Head Baseball Coach Larry Hays announced today that 10 players signed a national letter of intent or financial aid papers for the 2004 season during the recent national signing period.
The Red Raiders signed a total five pitchers, two catchers, two infielders and one outfielder and all 10 will enroll at Texas Tech in the fall of 2003. The group includes nine junior college players and one high school senior.
"We are really pleased with this group of players," said Texas Tech Head Coach Larry Hays. "I have to give credit to my staff of Greg Evans and Daren Hays for the great job they did. I think we found some players who are going to make an immediate impact on our team and I think our fans will have a lot of fun watching them play."
2004 Signees
Aurio O'Neil, OF, (6-2, 195, L/R, Whitier, Calif./St. Paul High/Cerritos J.C.)
Played high school baseball at St. Paul High School in Whitier, Calif. where he was a First-Team All-League pick all three years...broke the school record for most hits in a career...batted .470 with 47 hits, six home runs, 12 doubles, four triples and 25 walks his senior year...was a First-Team All-Conference selection last year at Cerritos Junior College where he played alongside current Red Raider T.J. Bruce...hit .385 with 70 hits, 12 doubles, seven triples, 32 walks and had a .990 fielding percentage
Jason Thomas, C, (5-11, 200, R/R, Duncanville, Texas/High/Howard Junior College)
Played high school baseball at Duncanville High School where he was named the District 7-5A First-Team Catcher in 2000 and the District 7-5A Defensive Most Valuable Player in 2001...batted .310 with two home runs and 10 doubles his senior year...last season at Howard Junior College he hit .357 with 45 hits, two home runs, five double, 18 walks and tallied a .989% fielding percentage
Dennis Pawelek, RHP, (6-3, 180, L/R, Springville, Nev./High/C.C. of Southern Nevada)
Was a First-Team All-State first baseman in high school and played his first year of junior college baseball at Snow College...will play at the Community College of Southern Nevada this season after Snow College announced at the end of last year that it would drop its program
Ryan Andrews, OF/IB, (6-1, 225, R/R, Missoula, Mont./Westchester High/Cerritos J.C.)
Was a First-Team All South Coast Conference and First-Team All-Regional pick while at Cerritos College...hit .310 last year with 48 hits, three home runs, 11 doubles, five triples and 21 walks
Josh Brady, INF/OF, (5-11, 195, R/R, Pleasant Grove, Utah/High/C.C of Southern Nevada)
Played high school baseball at Pleasant Grove High School in Pleasant Grove, Utah...hit .444 with 40 hits, 10 home runs, 10 doubles, three triples with 21 walks his senior year...at the Community College of Southern Nevada last year he hit .333 with 52 hits, two home runs, 11 doubles, two triples and walked 15 times
Josh Yates, C, (6-3, 190, R/R, San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights High School)
Will be a senior this year at Alamo Heights High School where he has already earned both All-State and All-City honors...named First-Team All-District in both 2001 and 2002...has hit .506 in his career with 79 hits, six home runs, 25 doubles, eight triples and been walked 30 times
Charles "Chuckie" Platt, RHP (6-2, 225, R/R, Santa Fe, Texas/High/Alvin C.C.)
Was a First-Team All-District pick and First-Team All-County selection in 2001 at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas...tallied a 0.88 ERA through 70 innings with 68 strikeouts and just eight walks...last year at Alvin Community College he had a 4.99 ERA through 50 innings of work
Gino Gonzalez, LHP (6-2, 205, L/L, Las Vegas, Nev./C.C of Southern Nevada)
Earned All-Region and All-State honors while at Cimarron High School in Las Vegas, Nev...played his first year of college ball at the Community College of Southern Nevada where he won 11 games and earned All-Conference honors...did not play last season due to an arm injury...has been drafted three times including the 2002 Draft when he was taken by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Joel Clark, RHP (6-0, 192, L/L, Orem, Utah/C.C of Southern Nevada)
Earned All-Region honors in three varsity sports (football, basketball and baseball) at Orem High School in Orem, Utah...played in a limited role at Utah Valley College in 2002 before transferring midway through the season....will play at the Community College of Southern Nevada this spring
Barrett Pliler, LHP (6-2, 200, L/L, Carrollton, Texas/Creek View High/Blinn Junior College)
Tallied a 5-3 record last season at Blinn Junior College with a 2.80 ERA earning him All-Conference honors...pitched 74 innings giving up just 23 earned runs and struck out 48 batters...in league play he was 4-2 with a 1.86 ERA with 38 strikeouts
