LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team inched closer to being eligible for the NCAA Tournament Saturday night as it avenged a five-game loss to the Texas A&M Aggies earlier this season with a 3-1 (30-28, 30-27, 19-30, 30-25) win at the United Spirit Arena.
Tech improves to 13-14 on the season and 8-10 in Big 12 play with the win, while the Aggies drop to 18-9 overall and 10-8 in conference action.
The Red Raiders got huge nights out of its two offensive leaders Saturday as both Melissa McGehee (Kerrville, Texas) and Kelly Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas) recorded 25 kills apiece. Senior Ann Romjue (Papillion, Neb.) came up big on defense as she set a new school record for digs in a four-game match with 33 as the Red Raiders dug 94 balls as a team.
Melissa Munsch led the way for A&M as she tallied 16 kills and was one of five Aggies to record double-digit digs, 17. The Aggies played well on defense all night as they dug 85 balls and recorded 20 blocks to Tech's 9.5 blocks.
With the win and a loss by Kansas tonight, Tech is tied with Colorado just one game back of sixth place in the conference with two matches to go for all three schools.
The Red Raiders will close out the 2002 home schedule Wednesday night when they take on the Iowa State Cyclones at 5:30 p.m. Immediately following the match, or at 7:30 whichever is later, the Lady Raiders will host Valparaiso. All fans attending the volleyball match will be allowed to stay and watch the basketball match for free.
