LUBBOCK, Texas - Wednesday night marked the final home match in the career of three seniors for the Texas Tech volleyball team, who swept Iowa State (31-29, 30-22, 30-18) before a record-setting crowd of 5,507 at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas.
Tech (14-14, 9-10) completed the sweep with a 30-18 win the third game by hitting .250 and limiting the Cyclones (10-21, 1-18) to just .057 hitting with only five kills.
Sophomore Kelly Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas) led all players with 21 kills and 10 digs on a night that belonged to the seniors. Melissa McGehee (Kerrville, Texas) recorded her team leading 12th double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Stacey Poole (Las Cruces, N.M.) ended the night with four kills on 10 attempts and three digs while Ann Romjue (Papillion, Neb.) recorded a team best 13 digs and an ace.
Iowa State hung with the Red Raiders throughout much of game one, and most of game two, but Tech finally proved too strong in the second game holding ISU to a match low .035 hitting.
It wasn't pretty in the early going as Tech struggled to find its offensive rhythm. The Red Raiders managed 20 kills in game one, but committed 11 errors as well. What the Red Raiders were missing on offense they made up for on defense as Tech held the Cyclones to just .178 hitting in taking a 1-0 lead in the match, 31-29.
Wednesday's win sets up a must-win showdown for the Red Raiders who have managed to go 6-2 during the month of November. In order to be eligible for the NCAA Tournament, a team must have a better-than .500 record. With a win at #19 Missouri, Tech will finish the regular season one game over .500. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
