Lubbock, Texas - Devonne Giles, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound sophomore forward from Seward County College in Liberal, Kansas has become the third signee for the Red Raiders and Coach Bob Knight for the 2003-2004 season.
Giles remarked, "Coach Knight is one of the best. It's going to be a real good experience. He'll teach me all I need to know and hopefully get me ready for the next level."
Giles averaged a team high 13.7 points and 10.1 rebounds over 34 games last season as a freshman for Seward, which advanced to Region VI of the junior college finals before falling to Coffeyville JC (Kansas). Coffeyville lost in the national championship game by a single point.
Devonne shot 53% from the field (186/349) and 73% from the free-throw line (93/128) to earn Second Team-All Conference honors in his freshman season at Seward. He had narrowed his choices to Arkansas and Kansas State before signing with Texas Tech.
"He can step out on the perimeter and score from 15 or 16 feet, or play underneath the basket. He's got real long arms," remarked Seward coach Dave Brown. "The program is on the upswing. Coach Knight is going to get the players. It's just going to keep growing," commented Brown.
Devonne graduated from Shabazz High School (Newark, NJ) where he was runner-up as New Jersey's player-of-the-year to DeJuan Wagner, who left Memphis as a freshman for the NBA draft.
