CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Texas Tech women's soccer could not get past the Northern Iowa Panthers, as they fell 1-0 on a cold and rainy afternoon in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The match was the Red Raiders final non-conference game of the season, as they will face the Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday in Ames, Iowa, in a Big 12 match up.
Tech (2-15, 0-8 Big 12) out shot the Panthers in the first period by a margin of 7-5, but it was Northern Iowa who got on the board with an early goal. Shanon Dechant scored unassisted as she lifted the ball over the head of goalie Megan Knauss (Tigard, Oregon) in the 7th minute to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Tech kept the pressure on the UNI defense as they forced the Panthers into 11 fouls in the first period, while only committing four. The Red Raiders produced several good scoring chances in the match, but could not convert. Sophomore defender Jordan Wicker (Euless, Texas) hit the post on a free kick and the Tech had an apparent goal waved off because of an infraction.
The Panthers (4-11-1) clamped down defensively in the second period limiting Tech to only 7 shots in the frame. The Red Raiders were led offensively by forwards Michaela Roberts (San Antonio, Texas) and Catie Arsenault (Keller, Texas), who each had three shots in the match. Knauss who was making her third consecutive start of the season made nine saves.
The Red Raiders will return after the road trip to host the Baylor Bears in the team's final regular season match on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. at R. P. Fuller Stadium. During the match the team will honor captain Lindsey Wile (Austin, Texas) who will be playing in the final home match of her Tech career.
