LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Head Baseball Coach Larry Hays announced the 2002 baseball schedule today that will feature eight teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
"I think we have put together a schedule that will be very challenging for our team, " said Texas Tech head coach Larry Hays who is now in his 16th season at Texas Tech. "This schedule should be good for our RPI but we also realize that for it good to be good for the RPI, you must win games. Probably the best part about it is we play 33 games at home where we can be surrounded by the best fans in college baseball."
Texas Tech will kick-off the 2002 season at the friendly confines of Dan Law Field Jan. 24-26 when it hosts the BYU Cougars in a three-game series. Following opening weekend, Texas Tech will hit the road for an 11-game road swing that will take the Red Raiders through New Mexico, South Texas and the DFW Metroplex. Tech will play New Mexico in Albuquerque Feb. 1-3 before traveling to Houston for the Second Annual Astros College Classic at Enron Field. At the Astros Classic, Texas Tech will face-off against TCU, Louisiana-Lafayette (a 2000 College World Series participant) and in-state rival Rice.
Hays and company will make their way up the state the next weekend as the squad will play in the Southwest Texas Tournament. The Southwest Texas Tournament will be played at the Dell Diamond (home of the AA Round Rock Express) in Round Rock pitting the Red Raiders against TCU, Southwest Texas and Houston. Texas Tech will conclude the road swing with a mid-week tilt against TCU Feb. 19-20 in Fort Worth.
Texas Tech will host 2001 NCAA Tournament participant Seton Hall in a three-game series Feb. 22-24 and will play New Mexico at home on Feb. 26 prior to the start of conference action.
The Big 12 Conference was not kind to Texas Tech as the Red Raiders open Big 12 play at arch-rival Texas A&M March 1-2. Tech will play Texas, Oklahoma State and Nebraska the next three weekends before closing out the month of March with Missouri at home, ending a very difficult month of conference play.
The good news for Red Raider fans is that beginning with Missouri on March 29th, the Red Raiders play 18 of their final 21 games of the regular season at Dan Law Field. During that stretch Tech will play Missouri, Kansas State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Oklahoma, Texas-Pan American and Baylor all at home. The only road trip will be a three-game series in Lawrence, Kan. against the Kansas Jayhawks April 12-14.
The Big 12 Baseball Tournament will move to a new location in 2002 as The Ballpark in Arlington will serve as host to this year's annual tournament. The tournament begins on May 22nd and runs through May 26th. NCAA Tournament play will begin on May 30th with the Regionals while the Super Regionals are set to start June 7th. The 2002 College World Series will be held June 14-22 at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
