WACO, Texas -- The Texas Tech men's tennis teamed turned things around today by defeating Oklahoma in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament, 4-1 in Waco, Texas, at the Baylor Tennis Center. The win gives the men's team its first ever victory in the Big 12 Tournament and head coach Tim Siegel earned his 102nd career victory.
Tech defeated the Sooners earlier this year in March in Lubbock, 6-1. The win gave Tech its only conference victory of the season and gave Siegel his 100th career victory. Today's win improves the all-time record under Siegel for the Red Raiders to 5-2.
In doubles action, the deadly duo of Richard Crabtree and Ben Gudzleak knocked off Matt Ogle and Chris Mitchell, 8-4 in the No. 1 position. The two have now won eight out of the past nine matches improving its conference best record to 7-2 on the year. Tech fell in the No. 2 position, but rebounded in the No.3 with Costa Yiannakapolous and Scotty George defeating Julio Martinez and Blake Mason, 8-2. This was the first victory for the two this year improving to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
The Red Raiders received some extra help today from the bottom of the line-up in singles by winning positions four, five and six. Positions one and three did not finish play. Tech fell in the No. 2 position, but rebounded with Costa Yiannakapolous winning in No. 4 over Evan Davis, 6-0, 6-0 snapping a four-match losing streak. In the No. 5 position, Chris Drumm dropped Mat Price in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Scotty George picked-up his first ever collegiate victory be defeating Blake Mason in the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-3.
With the win the No. 8 seeded Raiders will advance to the second round to battle No. 1 seeded Texas A&M tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
