Track And Field Hosted Texas Tech Open Today

LUBBOCK, Texas- The Texas Tech track and field team hosted the Air Force Academy and the University of Northern Colorado today battling cold winds in the Texas Tech Open at R.P. Fuller Stadium on the Texas Tech campus.
Field events began at 11 a.m. and running events started at 2 p.m. with a rolling schedule. The morning brought cold weather and West Texas winds. Despite high winds and ever present threat of rain and snow the meet continued as scheduled.
In the first event of the day, long jump the Red Raiders lone contestant captured second place with Tyson McKinney jumping 6.61 meters.
The Red Raiders grabbed its first place of the day in the men's javelin throw. Ryan Luna swept the competition by throwing 66.30 meters (217'06"). The second place finisher threw 49.18 meters (161'04").
Continuing with field events the Red Raiders' Ryan Curry earned second place in the men's discus throw with a throw of 51.46 meters. In the women's discus throw Tech snatched the top three spots with Megan Schuessler in first place by throwing 43.52 meters. In second Tracy Anderson had a throw of 43.04 meters and in third Katy Goedke had a throw of 40.68 meters.
Mike Beasley for Tech placed second in the men's high jump at 2.05 meters. In the pole vault Tech placed third with Ken Wilson finishing with a throw of 4.57 meters.
Scott Moore placed second in the most exciting event of the day to watch the steeplechase with a time of 10:02.23. Moore was less than six-hundredths of a second behind first place finisher Albert Kelly of Air Force.
The women's 4x100 relay closed with Tech taking first by 2.64 seconds. The relay team finished at 46.96 ahead of Northern Colorado who took second at 49.60. The men's 4x100-relay team started where the women finished. The men took first place by finishing at 42 seconds flat.
Senior Leigh Daniel continued her tradition of placing in first by winning the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:45.66. In third place Tech's Tracie Akerhielm with a time of 4:49.67.
The women's 400-meter dash finished with Tech taking the top two spots. Melonie Barrow won the event with a time of 56.03 and D'Andria Brigham followed behind in second place at 58.22. Antonio Franklin won the men's 400-meter dash by .87 of a second with a time of 49.74.
Tech took one and two in the women's 100 meter dash. Ashley Mitchell finished at 12.11 in first place and Rachel' Stevenson finished in second place at 12.42. The men followed placing in second in the men's 100 meter dash with Saidric Williams having a time of 10.57.
In the women's 200 meter dash Tech took the top three spots led by Tami Zachary at 25.18. Tiffany Green finished in second at 25.31 and Rachelle Evans placed third with a time of 25.45.
Senior Leigh Daniel won her second race of the day by taking the women's 3,000 meter run. The gun fired and she never looked back. She finished with a time of 10:22.47. In the same race freshman Tracie Akerhielm earned third place with a time of 10:53.83.
The women finalized today's events by placing one and two in the 4x400 meter relay. Tech's "A" team took first with a time of 3:53.75 while Tech "B" team took second at 4:08.20. The men complemented the women by finishing the men's 4x400 meter relay in first place with a time of 3:24.32.
The Red Raiders will run, jump and throw back into action April 4-7, in Austin, Texas, at the Texas Relays.
