LUBBOCK, Texas - Kasib Powell scored 19 points and had five assists as Texas Tech beat UTEP 81-56 Monday night.
Tech (4-1) never trailed and led by as many as 29 with three minutes remaining in the game.
The Red Raiders scored on 10 of 12 possessions in the first six minutes of the second half against the Miners.
They also went on a 20-6 run that gave the Red Raiders a 24-point lead. During the run, Andre Emmett scored eight points, and Nick Valdez and Powell each had steals that led to dunks.
Will Chavis scored 17 points for Tech, hitting on all four of his 3-point shots. Andre Emmett scored 16 and Andy Ellis added 12.
UTEP (2-3) struggled to control the ball in the second half and had 17 turnovers. Brian Stewart scored 15 for the Miners and Antone Jarrell added 11.
Tech led 40-30 at halftime. Entering the second half, the teams exchanged 9-3 runs before the Red Raiders outscored the Miners 18-9.
Tech coach Bob Knight came off the bench screaming at a referee late in the first half after a Tech player was called for a shooting foul, but he quickly sat down.
A few minutes later, the Miners bench was slapped with a technical after a referee gave a warning to one of the assistant coaches.
Tech now leads the series with UTEP, 30-21.
