LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech football coaching staff put 27 Red Raider newcomers through their first paces as college football players with a pair of practices in shoulder pads and helmets Wednesday.
"The morning practice was a typical first practice, but it got a lot better this afternoon," first-year head coach Mike Leach said. "We did a lot of orientation type things this morning, a lot of walking and teaching through drills.
"This afternoon we not only got a lot more done, but we got a lot more done more quickly," Leach said. "Players always do things better when they are sure about where they are going and what they are supposed to do."
Texas Tech worked out for about 90 minutes in the morning and for about two hours Wednesday evening. The schedule is expected to be the same Thursday, with morning practice starting at 9 a.m. and the afternoon session at 4 p.m.
The day was especially long for five Red Raider freshmen. Dylan Gandy, Clay McGuire, Jeremy Milam, Mike Smith and Geremy Woods all played in the TCHS All-Star Game in Houston Tuesday night and made it to Lubbock in time to work out twice Wednesday.
Tech upperclassmen report Thursday, will go through orientation meetings dealing with academics and compliance on Friday before meeting Red Raider fans for autographs and photos Friday evening at 7 o'clock at Jones SBC Stadium.
The photo and autograph session is free to the public. Contrary to earlier reports, fans are now being asked to park on the East side of Jones Stadium and enter through the Southeast ramp below Gate 4. The change is due to construction on the West Side.
The first full squad practice is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. All Texas Tech practices are open to the public.
