LUBBOCK, Texas - With the West Texas temperature approaching the 100-degree mark, the Texas Tech football team completed its third day of two-a-day practices with a morning workout on the grass practice fields and the latter half of the afternoon workout on the artificial turf in Jones SBC Stadium.
Each practice lasted just under three hours. According to head coach Mike Leach, the afternoon practice was the better of the two.
"We looked a lot better this afternoon," Leach said. "We had a good effort, but struggled with execution. It was a good overall effort, though."
The Red Raiders used the latter half of each practice prepping for next week's season opener against New Mexico. The offense ran play schemes against the scout team defense, while the defense prepped against the scout team offense.
Leach recognized the play of Carlos Francis, noting that the wide receiver put together two strong practices. Tim Baker and Ricky Williams also received Leach's praises, while freshman quarterback Jason Winn was impressive with the reps he received.
Texas Tech opens the season in the Hispanic College Fund Classic on August 26 against New Mexico. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Jones SBC Stadium.
