The Texas Tech Red Raiders once again used the big comeback to defeat the UT-San Antonio Roadrunners in the final game of the 2000 season at Dan Law Field. Tech spotted the Roadrunners a 10-2 lead after four innings, but scored six in the fifth, four in the sixth and three in the eighth to come away with their 25th home victory of the year. The Red Raiders have won at least 25 games at Dan Law Field for seven straight seasons.
UT-San Antonio scored early with a run in the first, two in the second and seven in the fourth to take the 10-2 lead. Red Raider starter Cory Metzler lasted three innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, a walk and three strikeouts. Head coach Larry Hays went to Steve Rowe, but Rowe allowed five runs (three earned) on three hits while facing just five batters. Finally, Clancy Fossum got Tech out of the fourth inning after the Roadrunners scored seven runs on six hits and an error.
In the fifth, Tech answered with six runs as they sent 11 batters to the plate and pounded out six hits. David O'Keeffe sent home Chaz Eiguren and Jason Rainey with his first triple of the season. Prior to the game, O'Keeffe was honored as the top senior student-athlete on the Tech baseball team.
Scott Holzhauer started the six-run sixth by getting hit by a pitch. He moved to third on a double by Shaun Larkin and both scored when Marco Cunningham singled to leftfield. Cunningham scored Tech's third run of the inning on Rainey's single. After Eiguren and Rainey scored on O'Keeffe's triple, Trey Lunsford's bunt sent O'Keeffe home to make the score 10-8 after five innings.
The Red Raiders added four more in the sixth on two hits and four walks. This time, O'Keeffe rapped a double down the rightfield line that scored Eiguren to give Tech the 11-10 lead.
Texas Tech added three more runs in the eighth to push the score to 15-10, but the Roadrunners threatened in the top of the ninth. After scoring two runs off Fossum, Kevin Tracey entered the game with one out and runners on first and third. He promptly struck out one and induced a fly out to Rainey in left to seal the win and earn his seventh save of the year.
The Red Raiders will be on the road for their final three games of the season. Tech will go to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to face Oklahoma State, May 12-14. The 2000 Big 12 Phillips 66 Tournament will be May 17-21 in Oklahoma City.
