OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 17, AP) - Ryan Hubele hit a grand slam and drove in six runs Wednesday night to lead Texas to an 8-4 victory over Texas Tech in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.
Hubele's six RBIs tied the tournament record set by Oklahoma's Brian Shackelford against Tech in 1997.
The grand slam was the second of the tournament. Nebraska's Adam Shabala hit one in the Cornhuskers' 12-10 loss to Missouri earlier in the day.
Fourth-seeded Texas (40-16) advances to play Thursday night against the winner of Wednesday's late game between Texas A&M and top-seeded Baylor. Texas Tech (33-23) will play the loser of that game Thursday afternoon.
The Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Chaz Eiguren. But Texas took the lead for good with two in the bottom of the inning, including a run-scoring single by Hubele.
His home run came in the third off Blake McGinley (5-3) and made the score 6-1. Texas Tech got within 6-4 with three in the fourth, including a two-run triple by Mark Austry, but the Longhorns added their final two in the sixth.
D.J. Jones (11-5) went 8 2/3 innings for the victory. Charlie Thames came on with two on and two out and retired the only batter he faced to get his 17th save, a Longhorn season record.
