After being shutout for 19 consecutive innings, the Red Raider bats came alive while Kevin Tracey tossed his eighth complete game of the year in Tech's 7-3 victory on Sunday afternoon. Leftfielder Jason Rainey set a new school record in the ninth inning with a two-run triple down the rightfield line. The triple was Rainey's ninth of the year setting the new single-season mark.
Texas Tech got on the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning. Rainey, who finished the game 4-4 with four RBI, hit his first double of the afternoon and scored two batters later when David O'Keefe reached on an error.
Oklahoma State took the lead in the bottom of the third with two runs on three hits off Tracey. Carlos Gautreaux and Luke Scott drove in a run each with a pair of doubles.
The Red Raiders tied the game with a run in the fifth, but left the bases loaded. Scott Holzhauer scored the lone run of the inning on a bases-loaded walk by Rainey. Holzhauer reached base on a single to centerfield. He was followed by Marco Cunningham knocking a base hit to right and Chaz Eiguren being hit by a pitch. Cunningham, Eiguren and Rainey were left on base when Chad Landry struck out to end the inning.
Both teams remained scoreless in the sixth before the Red Raiders added two in the top of the seventh and the Cowboys scored one in the bottom half to make the score 4-3. Cunningham scored Tech's third run on a double by Eiguren. Eiguren came around to score on Rainey's single to right center that dropped in front on Cowboy second baseman Curt Anthony.
With the score still at 4-3 in the ninth, Texas Tech added three more runs to make it 7-3. Shaun Larkin singled to start the rally for the Red Raiders. He was followed by Eiguren's walk and both scored on Rainey's record-breaking triple to the rightfield corner. Rainey scored Tech's seventh run one batter later when Miles Durham singled to rightfield.
Kevin Tracey retired three of the four batters faced in the bottom of the ninth to give Tech the victory in the final regular season game.
Texas Tech will play Texas in the first round of the 2000 Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Tech finished the regular season at 33-22 overall and 18-12 in the conference.
