The Texas Tech Red Raiders won for the sixth time in the last seven games Tuesday night and in the process broke a 12-year old single-season school record. David O'Keeffe's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning was Tech's 35th of the season breaking the mark set in 1988.
After spotting Wayland Baptist an early 3-0 lead, Texas Tech scored two runs in the third, fourth and sixth to overtake the Pioneers and go on to win, 7-3.
In the third, the Red Raiders scored twice on back-to-back doubles by Scott Holzhauer and Shaun Larkin. Holzhauer's double scored Trey Lunsford and Larkin sent Holzhauer home on his double down the leftfield line.
Texas Tech added two more in the fourth on two hits. After Jason Rainey singled to center, he scored on a Mark Austry single to right. Cory Sellars scored the go-ahead run on O'Keeffe's sacrifice fly.
Rainey started the sixth inning with his eighth home run of the year. He sent a blast to right field and chased Pioneer starter Jason Shiplet. Tech added one more in the sixth after Sellars walked and later scored on a fielder's choice by Lunsford.
The final run of the game came in the eighth when Austry was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Lunsford, Austry scored Tech's seventh run on a Holzhauer ground out.
Steve Rowe upped his record to 5-0 with six scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Rowe allowed just three hits, one walk and struck out a season-high seven. Chad Reynolds started the game and allowed three runs on five hits in three innings of work.
The Red Raiders will play their final home conference series this weekend when they host the Oklahoma Sooners. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 7 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. Texas Tech is 28-19 overall and 15-9 in the Big 12.
