Texas Tech Defeats Southwest Texas State

After reaching double-digit runs in just two of the last 13 games, the Red Raider bats exploded in Tuesday's 19-4 win over Southwest Texas State at Dan Law Field. The 19 runs was the highest offensive output since winning 19-7 on April 1 against Kansas State.
After being held scoreless for the first two innings, the Red Raiders scored at least two runs in each of the next six innings to build the 19-4 lead. Tech scored six in the third, four in the fourth, three in fifth and two in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
In the third, Texas Tech sent nine batters to plate and scored the six runs on just three hits. Shaun Larkin's three-run homer to right provided the scoring punch for the Red Raiders. In the fourth inning, Tech once again sent nine batters to the plate and scored four times with one hit. The Red Raiders were aided by five walks from Bobcat pitchers in the inning. The lone hit for Tech was a two-run single by Jason Rainey to make the score 9-0. The Red Raiders lead 10-0 after four innings.
Texas Tech plated three more runs in the fifth on two hits and two Southwest Texas errors. Scott Holzhauer's two-run double to left sent home Trey Lunsford and Eric McLamore improve Tech's lead to 12-0. Holzhauer scored two batter later on a single to right by Chaz Eiguren.
After the Bobcats scored four in the top half of the sixth, Tech answered the a pair of runs in the bottom half. Back-to-back singles by McLamore and Holzhauer scored Rainey and Lunsford. In the seventh, Texas Tech added two more on a two-run pinch-hit single by Brennan Burns that scored Eiguren and Rainey.
The Red Raiders scored twice in their final at bat by sending eight batters to plate. Marco Cunningham started the rally with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Rainey. Eiguren scored the game's final run when he was forced home on a bases-loaded walk by David O'Keeffe.
Starter Cory Metzler was credited with win to improve his record to 3-2 on the year. He went six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and three strikeouts. Chad Reynolds, Clancy Fossum and Steve Rowe provided three innings of scoreless relief while allowing two hits and two walks.
Texas Tech is now 25-18 on the season and will travel to Lawrence, Kansas this weekend for a three-game series with the Jayhawks. First pitch will be at 7 p.m. on Friday night followed by a 2 p.m. game Saturday. The final game of the series will be Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be televised live on the College Sports Southwest network.
