For the second straight game, the Texas Tech baseball team used the big inning to defeat the San Diego State Aztecs at Dan Law Field. On Friday, Tech scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. On Saturday afternoon, the Red Raiders scored eight runs in the bottom of the eight to break a 6-6 tie. Designated hitter Chaz Eiguren led Tech at the plate by going 4-4 with a run and four RBI. Steve Rowe picked up his second win of the season with 4.0 innings of relief for starter Cory Metzler.
The Red Raiders jumped out to an early 5-1 lead with two runs in the first inning and three in the second. Marco Cunningham led off the game with a single and stole second. Eiguren singled home Cunningham to score Tech's first run. Two batters later, Jason Rainey tripled home Eiguren to give Tech a 2-1 lead. In the second inning, it was Eiguren again as he knocked a two-run single to centerfield to score Eric McLamore and Trey Lunsford.
The Aztecs tied the game in the top of the eighth after scoring one in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Aztecs used three pitchers as eight of nine Tech batters scored. Ten of the first 11 batters reached base with Eiguren's sacrifice fly being the only out. At the end of the inning, Tech had sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on six hits and two San Diego State errors.
In the ninth, the Aztecs threatened to score as the first two batters reached base. After getting a strikeout and ground out, Red Raider pitcher Steve Rowe loaded the bases with a walk. Rowe finished the game by striking out Sean Pierce.
The final game of the series will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Red Raiders will go on the road next weekend as they travel to Texas A&M and UT-Pan American.
