Red Raiders Upset No. 6 Baylor

The Texas Tech baseball team ended their season-high five-game losing streak by defeating Big 12 foe Baylor, 3-2 on Friday night. Starting pitcher J.J. Newman earned his second win of the season while Kevin Tracey was credited with his second save.
After spotting Baylor a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Red Raiders scored a pair of runs off Baylor starter Chad Hawkins in the bottom of the third. Hawkins entered the game with a 0.76 ERA over six previous starts.
Eric McLamore started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Scott Holzhauer ground out. McLamore scored Tech's first run two batters later on a single by Chaz Eiguren. Chad Landry, Jason Rainey and Marco Cunningham registered back-to-back-to-back singles to score Eiguren and give Texas Tech a 2-1 lead.
The lead didn't last long as the Bears scored one in the top of the fourth on a single by Mike Huggins that scored Matt Williams. Williams led off the inning by being hit by a pitch.
In the fifth, Texas Tech took the lead for good when Cunningham singled, stole second and scored on Mark Austry's single to leftfield.
Landry, making his second consecutive start in rightfield, led the Red Raiders with a 3-4 night at the plate. Cunningham was 2-4 with a run and an RBI while Austry finished the night 1-3 with an RBI.
Newman, making his fourth start of the season, scattered eight hits while allowing just two runs, five walks and four strikeouts. Tracey earned his second straight save in his second career relief appearance. He enterend the game with one man on and no outs. After allowing a single, Tracey retired three of the last four batters faced to seal the win for Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders are now 14-13 overall and 3-4 in the Big 12 while Baylor stands at 18-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The two teams will play game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. The series finale will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday and televised live by FOX Sports Southwest.
