The Texas Tech Red Raiders put up double-figures in runs and hits for the second straight game as they defeated New Mexico State 17-3 on Friday afternoon. In the first two games of 2000, Tech has scored 31 runs on 27 hits. Four players recorded multihit games with Miles Durham and Chaz Eiguren collecting three hits apiece.
The Red Raiders got on the board early with five runs in the first and four in the second inning. Tech has scored 19 runs in the first three innings of its two games this year. On Wednesday against West Texas A&M the Red Raiders lead 10-0 after the third inning.
In three of the first four frames, Texas Tech sent at least nine batters to the plate. In the first inning, the Red Raiders scored five runs on just two hits. The scoring started with a Durham single to center followed by a Shaun Larkin walk. Eiguren, the designated hitter, reached base on a throwing error which allowed Durham and Larkin to score the first two runs of the game. Five batters later, Jason Rainey knocked in David O'Keeffe and Brennan Burns who had reached base with a walk. Tech went on to score four in the second, four in the fourth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth.
On the mound, right-hander Kevin Tracey won his first game of the season. Tracey, who was 9-1 last season, allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits, a walk and four strikeouts over 5.0 IP. Steve Rowe (1.0 IP), Dusty Buck (0.2 IP), Clancy Fossum (1.1 IP) and Cory Metzler (1.0 IP) combined to hold the Aggies to just two runs on two hits in 4.0 relief IP.
The two teams will play again tomorrow at Dan Law Field with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. The final game of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. All of the action can be heard on KTXQ-950 AM and on Texas Tech's website www.texastech.com.
