LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team had no problems with the Kansas Jayhawks as the Red Raiders won 15-1, 15-5, 15-11 on Wednesday evening at United Spirit Arena.
Senior outside hitter Colleen Smith had a record setting night for Texas Tech as she became the school's single-season record holder for kills. With Texas Tech ahead 12-5 in the second game, Smith hammered a ball to the right side of the Kansas court to give her 12 kills on the night which was good enough to surpass Brande Brown who tallied 431 kills during the 1996 season. Smith finished the night with 20 kills which gives her 440 the year.
Texas Tech (21-6, 9-6) jumped out to a commanding 12-0 lead before the Red Raiders allowed Kansas to get on the scoreboard. That one point would be all that Kansas would muster as Tech rolled off three straight points to win 15-1. In the second game, Tech jumped out to another big lead as the Red Raiders held a 12-1 advantage. Kansas mounted a five point scoring spree but it was not enough to hold off Texas Tech as senior Janelle Jones sealed the game with a kill to the left side. At the intermission, Colleen Smith led Texas Tech with an impressive .545 hitting percentage (12-0-22).
Kansas was able to keep the match close in the fourth game as both teams traded points until Tech rallied with six straight points to win 15-11.
On the night, Texas Tech was led by Colleen Smith who tallied 20 kills and a .349 hitting percentage. Junior Kate Jury had a big night for Texas Tech in the middle as she tallied 10 kills on 15 attempts with two errors for a percentage of .533. Texas Tech had three players hit over .500 on the night in Melissa McGehee (.500), Janelle Jones (.583) and Jury.
Texas Tech will travel to Norman, Okla. on Saturday to battle the Oklahoma Sooners. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
