Volleyball Rolls Past Iowa State, 3-0

AMES, Iowa - The Texas Tech Red Raiders put an end to a three-match losing streak by dropping the Iowa State Cyclones in three games (15-7, 15-7, 15-10) Wednesday evening at Hilton Coliseum.
With the win, Texas Tech improves to 17-4 on the season and 6-4 in the Big 12 while Iowa State falls to 2-17 and 0-10 in the Big 12. Junior outside hitter Heather Hughes-Justice became Texas Tech's single-season record holder in service aces when she tallied an ace on the first serve of the third game. Hughes-Justice entered the match tied with Cristine Martin who tallied 55 aces during the 1996 season. Hughes-Justice rattled off three-straight aces to start the third game and finished the night three.
Sophomore middle blocker Stacey Poole made her first career conference start and tallied two kills and two block assists in game-one and finished the evening with three kills. The Red Raiders jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and increased that lead to 12-4 thanks to key kills by sophomore Melissa McGehee. Tech allowed Iowa State to score three straight points before the Red Raiders sealed the game with two-straight points to win 15-7. Tech's win in game-one marked the first game-one victory in the last four matches. Texas Tech rattled off 17-straight game-one wins to start the season before falling to Colorado 13-15 on Oct. 7. Melissa McGehee tallied a game-high seven kills on 14 attempts.
In game-two, the Red Raiders allowed Iowa State to pull within one with the score 8-7 but Tech rallied with seven straight points to win the game 15-7 and took a 2-0 advantage to the lockerroom at the intermission. Once again, Melissa McGehee led the Red Raiders with six kills and seven digs giving her 13 kills and eight digs at the intermission.
Texas Tech jumped out to an early and commanding 8-1 in game-three before allowing the Cyclones to take their only lead of the match 9-10. Texas Tech responded to the Cyclone charge with six-straight points to win the game and take the match. Freshman Laura Grote saw her first Big 12 action at setter when she made the start for the Red Raiders in game-three. Junior Skydra Orzen had played setter in every game since Tech's match with Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Sept. 9 when Grote started and played the entire match. Tech played three true freshmen the majority of the game in Grote, outside hitter Angela Mooney and middle blocker Jana Kubalova.
Texas Tech was led by sophomore outside hitter Melissa McGehee's 14 kills and 10 digs. Senior Janelle Jones finished second on the team with 10 kills and two block assists. The Cyclones were paced by sophomore outside hitter Sarah Rollman who finished with 10 kills, six digs and two block assists.
