LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team erased a 1-2 deficit to rally past the Baylor Bears in five games (15-9, 11-15, 5-15, 20-18, 15-11) on Saturday night at the United Spirit Arena.
With the win, Tech improves to 18-4 overall and 7-4 in the Big 12 while Baylor falls to 12-8 and 5-6 in the Big 12. Tech's win over Baylor gave the Red Raiders and the Bears a 1-1 record against each other this season as the Bears were victorious earlier in the season 3-1 in Waco.
Texas Tech looked impressive early as the team jumped out to an early lead and was able to hang on and win 15-9. Sophomore Melissa McGehee had an outstanding game with eight kills and five blocks. In the second game, Tech found itself in yet another game-two hole as Baylor jumped out to a commanding 12-5 lead before Tech was able to begin a rally. The Bears, led by Stevie Nicholas' seven kills in the game, were able to hold on and win the second game 15-11 to even the match at the intermission.
In game-three, it looked like d?j? vu as the Bears stormed out to a commanding 8-1 lead and never looked back on their way to a 15-5 win. In Tech's previous match with Baylor on Sept. 13, the Red Raiders took game-one from Baylor but allowed the Bears to win the next three to win the match.
The fourth-game of the match was arguably one of the better matches in Big 12 history as both teams held off eight game points but it was the Red Raiders who prevailed in the end 20-18. Texas Tech used the momentum from that fourth game to t o win game-five 15-11 to seal the match. The Red and Black got five blocks in the fifth game.
On the night, Texas Tech had two players score double-doubles in Melissa McGehee (21 kills and 21 digs) and Kate Jury (14 kills and 14 digs). Senior Janelle Jones had a big night with 17 kills and eight blocks. Texas Tech got 31 blocks in the match with Kate Jury and Colleen Smith leading the way with nine each.
Texas Tech will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 28 when they travel to Kansas State.
