Raider Cross Country Registers Strong Showing at Seattle Meet

SEATTLE, Wash. - - Leigh Daniel led the way for the Red Raider women at the Sundodger Invitational Cross Country meet at Lincoln Park in Seattle, winning the race with a seasonal best time of 16:52. Texas Tech's women finished second out of 13 teams. The Red Raider men also had a good showing, finishing 6th out of 13 thanks to strong efforts from Boniface Ndungu and David Leigh.
Daniel's time in the 5,000-meter race was just eight seconds shy of a course record and seven seconds better than the second place time of Melinda Campbell from the University of Washington. Washington's women, who came into the race ranked No. 8 in the nation, won the meet with a score of 28. Texas Tech tied for second with University of Idaho at 107 points. Big 12 rival Texas A&M was fourth with a score of 109.
Kristen Koppes registered a top 10 finish for the women, placing eighth out of 103 runners with a time of 17:29. Rounding out the scoring for the Red Raider women was Evette Turner (14th, 17:56), Tara Hangge (40th, 18:35) and Aimee Roberson (62nd, 19:23).
The men were led by the efforts of Boniface Ndungu and David Leigh. Ndungu finished 8th out of 104 runners with a time of 25:26 and Leigh was 11th with a time of 25:33. Both times were seasonal bests for the runners. Freshman Ryan Cruz was the third Tech runner to cross the finish line, placing 34th with a time of 26:12. Rounding out the scoring for the men were Jesse Williams (51st, 26:00) and Adrian Dodds (75th, 27:30).
University of Utah won the men's 8,000 meter race with a score of 47. They were followed by Texas A&M (95), Washington (108), Washington State (118), Club Northwest (159) and Texas Tech (163).
Both the men and women will be back in action next weekend as they travel the Cowboy Jamboree meet hosted by Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.
