Texas Tech vs. North Texas Game Notes
Texas Tech's team captains for the game were: Donnie Hart (Wolfforth, Texas), Montae Reagor (Waxahachie, Texas), Taurus Rucker (Denison, Texas) and Kyle Shipley (Arlington, Texas). Rob Peters (Katy, Texas) is also a team captain but missed the game due to a fractured right thumb and sprained left shoulder.
Texas Tech's win over North Texas moved the Red Raiders to a 2-0 record on the season for the first time since 1989. That season, Texas Tech began the season with a 3-0 mark.
For the second-straight game of the season, Texas Tech won the coin toss, but elected to defer the decision on possession to the second half of the game... The North Texas game marked the first career start for quarterback Matt Tittle (Flower Mound, Texas). Tittle threw his first career interception in the first quarter and his second in the third quarter... With the 43-yard TD on the first play of the game, Donnie Hart (Wolfforth, Texas) has caught three passes of 43 yards or more in the first two games of the 1998 season His TD catch on Texs Tech's first play of the game tied him with Donnie Anderson for fourth on the career list for TD receptions with 12...
Kyle Allamon (Lubbock, Texas) recorded the first reception of the year from the tight end position with :14 left in the first quarter. The catch also marked the first for Allamon since the Texas A&M game on Oct. 25, 1997 in College Station... Junior transfer Michael Wilborn (Olton, Texas) recorded his first career catch as a Red Raider late in the third quarter from the fullback position.
Senior Montae Reagor (Waxahachie, Texas) passed All-America Zach Thomas on the school career list for tackles for loss with his 29th in the first quarter and 30th in the third quarter.
Sophomore tailback Ricky Williams (Duncanville, Texas) scored his third touchdown of the season with a six-yard plunge with 3:33 left in the first quarter. He also added his fourth with 8:51 left in the third quarter. He scored just three touchdowns in his freshman campaign of 1997. Williams rushed for over 100-yards for the third-straight game, including the final game of the 1998 season.
Sophomore Chris Birkholz (Temple, Texas) attempted, and completed, his first-ever field goal with :09 left in the first half. He replaced Jaret Greaser (Amarillo, Texas), who was out of the game due to stiffness in his left leg. Birkholz also kicked extra points in the second half of the game... The complete second-string offensive line, with the exception of left tackle Jonathan Gray (Lubbock, Texas), played the final series of the 1st half for Texas Tech.
Texas Tech won both games in 1997 when travelling to the game site on the day of the game. The Red Raiders defeated Baylor and Texas last season... Jonathan Hawkins (Wichita Falls, Texas) recorded a career-long 31-yard reception in the third quarter. Hawkins' 78 yards receiving was also a career-high,surpassing the 40 yards he recored against Oklahoma last season... Texas Tech threw three interceptions in the game. The last time the Red Raiders threw two interceptions in a game was the Georgia contest in 1996 in Athens, Ga.
The last time Texas Tech shutout an opponent was a 34-0 win over Houston in 1994... The last time Texas Tech did not attempt a punt was against SMU in 1990... Texas Tech held North Texas to 125 yards of total offense,the fewest since limiting Kansas to 140 yards (129 pass, 11 rush) in 1997... The Texas Tech defense has not allowed a touchdown this season. The Red Raiders have also not allowed a TD in its last two appearances in Texas Stadium.
