LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech womens soccer team gears up for its 1998 season opener with a home contest against 20th-ranked SMU Lady Mustangs Tuesday. Gametime is slated for a 4 p.m. start at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
Playing such a tough team this early in the schedule should provide a good measuring gauge for Tech second-year head coach Felix Oskam. "This is the kind of scheduling we need in order to get recognized by the NCAA for post season play," Oskam said. "Strength of schedule is a key factor in the NCAA committees eyes. SMU will be a tough team to beat. Theyve had a very good recruiting year and are strong in every aspect of the game."
According to Oskam, the Red Raiders will give the Lady Mustangs a run for their money. "Our team has done very well in preseason," Oskam said. "This group is more focused on the task at hand now than they were this time last year. Were more experienced and more mature -- that will be apparent on the field. Its important for our team to get the season off to a good start against SMU."
Admission for all home soccer games are $4 for adults and $2 for high school students and under, and can be purchased at the stadium gate as well as at the Tech Ticket Office. Any kids wearing their soccer uniforms to the SMU game will be admitted free. The rowdiest team will win Powerade squeeze bottles and a cooler. At halftime of the Tech-SMU contest, the Texas Tech mens club soccer team will be recognized for winning the national championship.
