STANFORD, California - Leigh Daniel has automatically qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:53.95 late Saturday night at the Stanford Track and Field Invitational. Daniel's time is the 54th fastest ever run by a United States woman in the event. The time currently stands as the top collegiate outdoor mark this season and sets new Cobb Track and Texas Tech records. Daniel was over a minute and a half faster than the minimum automatic qualifying time of 34:30.00. It is also the second week in a row that Daniel has set a facility record. She won the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:40.38 last weekend in the first-ever meet at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers stadium.
Teammate Kristen Koppes finished 17th in the 3,000 meters with a time 9:53.37. The time was good enough to move her into fourth place on Texas Tech's all-time performance list in the event.
Athletes from both the men's and women's teams are scheduled to compete next weekend at the annual Texas Relays in Austin.
