LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech football fans have spoken. The results of fan balloting to determine the starters for Texas Tech's annual spring football game are complete and at almost every position, the fans selected the same starting lineup as the Red Raider coaching staff.
The poll, conducted by Texas Tech Athletics to encourage fan participation in its annual Red-Black spring football game, drew over 600 responses on its official internet website (http://www.texastech.com) and in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. The player with the most votes at each position earned the starting role in Saturday's final scrimmage of the team's spring drills.
"This has been a fun deal for our fans, players and coaches," said Texas Tech Football Coach Spike Dykes. "I must admit I was really surprised at the response to this poll. It just shows that a lot more people agree with the coaches than are willing to admit it. Our entire team is looking forward to Saturday. It's going to be a fun day."
Senior defensive end Montae Reagor (Waxahachie, Texas) earned the highest percentage of votes at any single position, gathering 542 of 634 total votes for 85.5 percent of the ballots cast. The tightest race was for tight end where Kyle Allamon (Lubbock, Texas) edged Cole Roberts (Shallowater, Texas) by a 240-220 margin. Tim Winn (Longview, Texas) was third with 138 votes at the position.
The only two players to earn a starting position in the game that weren't already listed as starters by the Texas Tech coaches were linebacker Kevin McCullar (Irving, Texas) and cornerback Antwan Alexander (Midland, Texas). McCullar, who started nine games in 1997, was listed behind Tim Duffie (Jefferson, Texas) at weakside linebacker but won the position by a 362-127 margin. Alexander was listed behind Oscar Solis (Slaton, Texas) in the battle to replace the departed Tony Darden (San Antonio, Texas) but won the voting by a 361-134 margin.
The Red-Black Game will kick-off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 in Jones Stadium. Chancellor John Montford will serve as an honorary guest coach of the Red Team, while Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Moses will coach the Black Team. Other activities associated with the event are the public transfer of the reigns by the Masked Rider and appearances by Raider Red, the Saddle Tramps and members of the Goin' Band from Raiderland. Following the game, Raider Alley will feature musical entertainment, food, merchandise and photo and autograph opportunities with Red Raider athletes, coaches and mascots.
