LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech University Chancellor John T. Montford has accepted an $800,000 gift of stock and cash today from Don and Ethel M. McLeod of Lubbock. The gift will be used to fund the construction of an intercollegiate tennis facility on the university campus.
"We're very glad to be able do this for Texas Tech University," said Don McCleod. "My wife and I have been involved with Texas Tech and the athletic department for a long time."
Thanks to the gift and additional moneys that have been raised, Montford said that the university would now be able to build 12 courts with spectator capabilities. Fundraising to build dressing rooms, coaches offices and other need structures to complete the facility is ongoing and will continue to be a priority of the university.
"I have been here for six years and to be able to talk about getting started on the tennis center is great," said Director of Tennis Tim Siegel. "I've waited a long time for this moment. I'm excited this day has come."
"Building this tennis facility will help to make Texas Tech one of the top tennis programs in the Big 12," Director of Athletics Gerald Myers said. "To accomplish what the men's tennis team has done without a full time home is remarkable. The entire athletic department is very gracious of the McLeod's wonderful gift."
The McLeods are members of the Chancellors Council and Red Raider Club. In addition, they are Presidential Endowed Scholarship donors. Both have served on the Texas Tech Foundation Board. In 1992, Ethel McLeod was named Outstanding Entrepreneur by the College of Business Administration.
Ethel and Don McLeod established Lubbock Radio Paging Service, Inc./Stenocall in 1954. The company is a full-line telecommunications company with more than 165 employees. Ethel McLeod serves as chief executive officer, while Don McLeod is president of the company.
The gift counts toward The Horizon Campaign, a $300 million goal Texas Tech has set to raise in private donations. To date more than $272 million has been pledged to fund scholarship endowment, faculty enhancement and campus improvement at Texas Tech.
